    Light Sensing Automated Blinds

    This project is solving the problem of wasted energy within buildings and homes, because currently the lights turned on inside building do not utilize natural, ambient light from the sun. Rather than having unnecessary light from a light source, the automated light sensing smart blinds can sense the amount of light outside the window and in the room, and then adjust the angle of the blinds to save energy by utilizing the available outdoor light. This way, the light source will not be running at maximum power output while there is excess light coming through the window. This project aims to design and construct the light sensing blinds to achieve the aforementioned goals. Hardware test results from this project demonstrate the capabilities of the smart blind system to measure ambient light inside the room and outside the window, to adjust the angle of each of the blinds on the window, and to change the desired brightness of the room

    The properties and genesis environments of South Atlantic cyclones

    A new climatology of South Atlantic cyclones is produced to provide new insights into the conditions leading to genesis in different regions of the domain. Cyclones are identifed and tracked based on the relative vorticity at 850 hPa computed from the winds. The characteristics of the cyclones are obtained by diagnostic variables sampled within a radial distance from the center to produce a spatial distribution of cyclone properties at the time of genesis. Also, cyclone centered composites are used to analyze the cyclone structure and evolution of cyclones during their genesis. There are four main cyclogenesis region in the South Atlantic Ocean: the Southern Brazilian coast (SE-BR, 30â—¦S), over the continent near the La Plata river discharge region (LA PLATA, 35â—¦S), the southeastern coast of Argentina (ARG, 40â—¦S-55â—¦S) and the Southeastern Atlantic (SE-SAO, centered at 45â—¦S and 10â—¦W). We found that cyclogenesis northward of 35â—¦S occurs mainly due to low-level forcing associated with moisture transport in the summer, and is associated with upper-level forcing in the winter due to a strong baroclinic environment and potential vorticity intrusions. Southward of 35â—¦S, cyclones develop in a high baroclinic environment throughout the year with only a small influence from moist processes. The cyclone composites reveal that SE-BR and SE-SAO cyclones are associated with secondary development, the LA PLATA cyclones development is influenced by an orographic low in their early stages, and ARG cyclones are influenced by thermal advection as an essential mechanism in the reduction of static stability

    A survey of compiler development aids

    A theoretical background was established for the compilation process by dividing it into five phases and explaining the concepts and algorithms that underpin each. The five selected phases were lexical analysis, syntax analysis, semantic analysis, optimization, and code generation. Graph theoretical optimization techniques were presented, and approaches to code generation were described for both one-pass and multipass compilation environments. Following the initial tutorial sections, more than 20 tools that were developed to aid in the process of writing compilers were surveyed. Eight of the more recent compiler development aids were selected for special attention - SIMCMP/STAGE2, LANG-PAK, COGENT, XPL, AED, CWIC, LIS, and JOCIT. The impact of compiler development aids were assessed some of their shortcomings and some of the areas of research currently in progress were inspected

    Preliminary evaluation of spectral, normal and meteorological crop stage estimation approaches

    Several of the projects in the AgRISTARS program require crop phenology information, including classification, acreage and yield estimation, and detection of episodal events. This study evaluates several crop calendar estimation techniques for their potential use in the program. The techniques, although generic in approach, were developed and tested on spring wheat data collected in 1978. There are three basic approaches to crop stage estimation: historical averages for an area (normal crop calendars), agrometeorological modeling of known crop-weather relationships agrometeorological (agromet) crop calendars, and interpretation of spectral signatures (spectral crop calendars). In all, 10 combinations of planting and biostage estimation models were evaluated. Dates of stage occurrence are estimated with biases between -4 and +4 days while root mean square errors range from 10 to 15 days. Results are inconclusive as to the superiority of any of the models and further evaluation of the models with the 1979 data set is recommended

    West African storm tracks and their relationship to Atlantic tropical cyclones

    The automatic tracking technique used by Thorncroft and Hodges (2001) has been used to identify coherent vorticity structures at 850hPa over West Africa and the tropical Atlantic in the ECMWF 40-year reanalysis. The presence of two dominant source regions, north and south of 15ºN over West Africa, for storm tracks over the Atlantic was confirmed. Results show that the southern storm track provides most of the storms that reach the main development region where most tropical cyclones develop. There exists marked seasonal variability in location and intensity of the storms leaving the West African coast, which may influence the likelihood of downstream intensification and longevity. There exists considerable year-to-year variability in the number of West African storm tracks, both in numbers over the land and continuing out over the tropical Atlantic Ocean. While the low-frequency variability is well correlated with Atlantic tropical cyclone activity, West African rainfall and SSTs, the interannual variability is found to be uncorrelated with these. In contrast, variance of the 2-6-day-filtered meridional wind, which provides a synoptic-scale measure of African Easterly Wave activity, shows a significant, positive correlation with tropical cyclone activity at interannual timescales

    A quantitative cost for various Spacelab flight hardware configurations is provided along with varied software development options. A cost analysis of Spacelab computer hardware and software is presented. The cost study is discussed based on utilization of a central experiment computer with optional auxillary equipment. Groundrules and assumptions used in deriving the costing methods for all options in the Spacelab experiment study are presented. The groundrules and assumptions, are analysed and the options along with their cost considerations, are discussed. It is concluded that Spacelab program cost for software development and maintenance is independent of experimental hardware and software options, that distributed standard computer concept simplifies software integration without a significant increase in cost, and that decisions on flight computer hardware configurations should not be made until payload selection for a given mission and a detailed analysis of the mission requirements are completed
